A great film of the Great Wall north of Beijing, including 'wild wall', accompanied by great music (踏古 (Ta Gu) by Lin Hai, 'Walking into Ancientry', with Chinese lute (pipa)). We [mum, dad - videographer - and son and daughter, from Singapore] hiked 3 sections of the Great Wall in winter, without any guides after studying blogs and posts by fellow hikers. All these sections are different. From the unrestored GuBeiKou Great Wall where we were the only people around, to the wonderful JinShanLing, where the climb is steep and every direction gives you good photo opportunities, to the restored MuTianYu where we hiked in heavy snowfall. We stayed at local farmhouses on both nights, dined with the locals and hitched rides to nearby bath-houses. Temperature ranged from -5 deg C (day) to -12 deg C (night). Winter daybreak is at 7am and the sky becomes dark by 5pm so one has only 10 hours of daylight, so plan your travelling and hiking schedules carefully. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was captured on video and we would like to share it with you. The feelings just can't be described - you need to experience it first hand. With Expat Natt ... "ExpFrom mud to masterpiece, join us this week as we uncover the history of Chinese porcelain, aka 'fine china'. Jiangxi province is home to the historic city of Jingdezhen, which played a major role in china's porcelain trade. The ceramic wares of this region made china famous during the silk road trade and were believed to be made with magic by europeans. The production of Jiangxi's ceramics were so influential, that they were even named 'fine china', meaning the fine wares which were made in China. We start our adventures by searching for the abandoned mountain mines which were home to the white clay, Kaolin, that first made this region world renowned. We then head over to the ancient village of Yaoli to see the influence of the porcelain industry and it's rich history which paved the path of the stunning pots and cermaic wares we see today. We search for ancient kiln sites in the surrounding countryside, and then head back into Jingdezhen city to see the remains of the incredible kilns that made the porcelain production come to life. Watch as artists hand mould, carve, and paint the breathtaking and intricate designs of cobalt blue on white clay. We even head to Sanbao International Ceramic Village to paint our own plates, and of course discover the mouthwatering local cuisine. Finally we venture into the local chinese night markets where local artists sell their bowls, vases, and china tea sets."

YuánMíngYuán was the original Summer Palace in BeiJing and sometimes referred to as the 'Old Summer Palace'. YuanMingYuan lies 8 kilometers (5 miles) northwest of central Beijing, close to the (new) Summer Palace (YíHéYuán 颐和园). It was constructed during the 18th and early 19th centuries and was a wonderland of lakes and waterways, bridges, hills and pavilions. There were originally towers, terraces, pavilions, halls, corridors, pagodas and bridges with a total construction area of 150,000 square meters. Artisans were recruited from all over China to enact the exquisite settings. Many of the 160 scenic spots were reproductions of famous mountains, rivers and famous gardens in China. The various styles of architecture, standing encircled by hills and streams, presented a most picturesque view. In addition, hundreds of invaluable Chinese art masterpieces and antiquities were stored in the halls, including some unique copies of literary works and collections. YuanMingYuan was, indeed, a veritable museum of garden construction and horticulture. Known to be one of the largest museums in the world, a popular name in China was the 'Garden of Gardens'. In 1860 during the 'Second Opium War', YuanMingYuan was looted then burned down by imperialist British and French troops. So great was the devastation that a new Summer Palace was later built nearby.
