JiuZhaiGou Valley (九寨沟), literally `Nine Villages Valley`, is a nature reserve and national park located in the north of SiChuan province, near the GanSu border. JiuZhaiGou is part of the MinShan mountains on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and is known for its many multi-level waterfalls, colorful mineral lakes and snow-capped peaks. The elevation ranges from 2,000 to 4,500 meters (6,600 to 14,800 feet). It lies 330 km (205 miles) north of the provincial capital of Chengdu and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This remote region has been inhabited by various Tibetan and Qiang peoples for many centuries. The valleys here are lined with 55 km of roads for shuttle buses, as well as wooden boardwalks and small pavilions. The boardwalks are typically located on the opposite side of the lakes from the roads. Many visitors will first take the shuttle bus to the end of RiZe or ShuZheng valley, then make their way back downhill by foot on the boardwalks, taking the bus when the next site is deemed too distant. JiuZhaiGou is a ten hour bus ride from ChengDu, or one can fly from ChengDu or ChongQing to JiuZhai HuangLong Airport, then take an hour long bus ride to HuangLong, or a 90 minute ride to JiuZhaiGou. There is also a daily flight to Xi`An, in the peak season, and from BeiJing, ShangHai and HangZhou.

HuangLong (`Yellow Dragon` - the appearance of the pools along HuangLong Valley) lies 150 kilometers (93 miles) north-northwest of the provincial capital ChengDu. All in all, it covers an area of almost 2,000 square kilometers. This area is known for its colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, as well as diverse forest eco-systems, snow-capped mountain peaks, waterfalls and hot springs. There are also a number of temples. HuangLong is also home to the Giant Panda.

JiaYuGuan is the first pass at the western end of the Great Wall of China. It lies 6 kilometers southwest of the city of JiaYuGuan in GanSu province. The fortress lies between two hills and near to an oasis that was then on the western edge of China. According to legend, when JiaYuGuan was being planned, the official in charge asked the designer to estimate the number of bricks required; the designer surprised the official by giving him an exact number. The official questioned his judgment, asking him if he was sure that would be enough, so the designer added one brick to the total. When JiaYuGuan was finished, there was one brick left over, which was placed loose on one of the gates, where it remains today. Nearby are the DunHuang Caves (also known as the MoGau Caves); these grottoes date from the 4th century AD and contain Buddhist art from over the next thousand years.

HuangShan (Yellow Mountain) is a group of mountains in AnHui province, east China. Famous for its rugged peaks, unusual rocks and tenacious pine trees, this beautiful landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Scenes from the film `Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon` were filmed in HongCun, which is close to the south slope of Mount HuangShan and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The second film shows some places from WuYuan County, JiangXi province, including LiKeng village. Many of the well-preserved structures here date back to the Tang Dynasty, around 700 AD.

The LongMen Grottoes, south of the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. GuanLin, a series of temples built in honor of Guan Yu, a hero of the Three Kingdoms period, and the White Horse Temple are also nearby. LuoYang is famed for its Water Banquet, which consists of 8 cold and 16 warm dishes all cooked in various broths, sauces or juices.

The DaMing Palace (DaMing Gong, Palace of Great Brilliance) was the imperial palace complex of the Tang Dynasty, located in its capital Chang`An. It served as the royal residence of the Tang emperors for more than 220 years. Today, the DaMing Palace site is designated a National Heritage Site of China, located a little north east of present-day Xi`An city center, ShaanXi province, central China. One can take subway line 2 to DaMingGongXi (DaMing Palace West) station. The palace complex was destroyed at the end of the Tang dynasty. The ruins were only discovered in the 1950s and some parts have now been reconstructed following careful archaeological analysis of the site. The wisdom of the ancients - part 1 - Lao Zi
In our view, one of the reasons why the Dao De Ching (credited to Lao Zi) is such a great work of philosophy lies in the very first words : 'The Dao that can be spoken is not the real Dao'. The most fundamental of standing on the shoulders of anyone is to understand that the concept, the simplification, the model, is not the reality; the words are but a pointing finger, not the moon to which they are pointed. The Dao, (Tao in older PinYin) is often translated as 'the way', which is not too far off, but it means also reality, how things are, as much as how to live the right way - that the essence of enlightenment is true sight of reality. The answer lies in seeing 'what is' rather than in a concept of what 'should be'.
A map is useful, but you need to travel that terrain yourself, with open eyes, and see the truth that cannot adequately be put into words.
Onto Daoism itself - if one thinks of life as a river, then we are not swimming in that river; we are that river.
